If she is not spending time with her pets and family, she is breaking records in the pool. Lara van Niekerk was an ordinary school learner with big dreams of competing in swimming worldwide when she proved that she is a force to be reckoned with by recently breaking the 50-metre breaststroke record at this year’s South African Swimming Championships.

She qualified for the 50m and 100m breaststroke to compete at the World Championships and Commonwealth Games while completing her school career through Impaq.

“Having such a busy schedule is not easy. I always try to make time for friends, even if it means just having a quick 20-minute coffee to catch up. I believe it is important to have a social life between all the training hours and schoolwork. I always try to work every day, even though some days I don’t get much time to do my schoolwork.” Says Lara.

Lara who is currently competing in swimming championships in Monaco, France and Spain adds that having a good education is important.

“I believe education is very important. Your sports career can only last a few years and you need to have a backup plan for thereafter. Receiving a good education through Impaq and being able to manage my schooling around my swimming and training has helped me a lot!”

The 50m breaststroke record-breaker says that having the freedom to manage her own time and pace is all due to the flexibility of homeschooling.

“Every Wednesday I have physio from 12:00 to 14:00. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays I do two swim sessions a day. Tuesdays and Thursdays I gym in the morning and swim in the afternoon. I also have a session on Saturdays, so that means I have 11 training sessions a week.”

Impaq offers flexibility, reliability, and peace of mind and have an online library of resources that makes registering for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) so much easier.

After matric, Lara plans to follow in the footsteps of her dad by studying finance and becoming a financial advisor, one day. Until then, she is on her way to conquering the swimming pools around the world.
